How I Built DocoDive on Free-Tier Cloud

Most people think building a production-grade web application requires money — servers, databases, storage, and email services all add up. I proved that assumption wrong with DocoDive, a fully functional cloud-native programming library built entirely on free-tier services with zero infrastructure cost.

The Problem: Traditional Libraries Are Expensive

A typical digital library needs server hosting, a relational database, file storage for large documents, and an email service for user verification. On traditional infrastructure, this stack costs hundreds of dollars per year — a barrier that stops young developers from shipping real products.

The Architecture: Decoupled Cloud

Instead of renting a single expensive server, I split the application across specialized cloud services, each with a generous free tier:

  • Flask on Render — application logic and routing, free web service tier
  • TiDB Serverless — distributed MySQL-compatible database, no cost up to 5GB
  • Cloudflare R2 — object storage for PDF files, zero egress fees
  • Brevo — transactional email for verification and password reset

Key Engineering Decisions

The hardest part wasn't writing code — it was designing a system where each piece stayed within its free limit. PDF binaries never touch the database; they stream directly to R2. Emails trigger asynchronously so the request cycle never blocks. Session tokens map cleanly to database states.

What I Learned

  • Cloud-native architecture is about decoupling, not just deploying
  • Reading provider documentation carefully saves real money
  • Free tiers are enough to run a production app if you design within limits
  • Security (hashing, validation, moderation) matters more than scale

Conclusion

DocoDive taught me that cost is a design constraint, not a blocker. By choosing the right tools and understanding each service's limits, any student can ship a real, scalable product — and that's exactly what I did.
